Our Methodology
Every ZACSUM ranking is built on real data, proprietary scoring, and editorial judgment. Here's how we approach it.
Our Approach
We believe that choosing where to live is one of the most important decisions a person or family can make. Our goal is to bring clarity to that decision with rankings grounded in data rather than anecdote.
Each ranking category is built around a specific lifestyle question — “Where are the best beach towns?” or “Where should families look?” — and evaluates towns across multiple dimensions relevant to that question.
We don't rely on a single metric. A great beach town needs more than just sand; it needs to be safe, walkable, and affordable enough to actually live in. Our multi-factor approach ensures that the towns at the top of our lists deliver across the board.
Data Foundation
Our rankings draw on a combination of federal, state, and proprietary data sources. We use official government datasets for demographic and economic indicators, public safety records for crime statistics, and a mix of third-party and proprietary data for quality-of-life metrics like walkability, school quality, and dining access.
We focus on small towns and mid-sized cities — the places where most Americans actually live, but which rarely get the attention of big-city-focused publications. Our dataset currently covers >150 towns across 40+ states, and we're adding more regularly.
Scoring & Ranking
Each category uses a proprietary composite scoring model. We evaluate towns across multiple relevant factors, normalize the data to account for scale differences, and apply category-specific weighting to produce a final score.
The weighting reflects what actually matters for each lifestyle. Safety-focused rankings naturally emphasize crime data, while foodie rankings put more emphasis on dining and culture. The exact weights and formula are part of our proprietary methodology and are refined over time based on reader feedback and data quality improvements.
Every town receives a composite score and a letter grade (A+ through F) to make comparisons intuitive. Score breakdowns on each list page show how a town performed across the key dimensions.
Editorial Review
Data tells us a lot, but not everything. Every ranking goes through editorial review before publication. We check for data anomalies, consider qualitative factors that numbers can't capture, and add context that helps readers understand why a town ranked where it did.
We also write introductions for each list that explain the results and highlight notable findings. Our goal is for every list page to be useful both as a quick reference and as a deeper read.
How Often We Update
Rankings are refreshed regularly as new data becomes available. Some data sources update annually, others quarterly. Each list page shows its last-updated date so you always know how current the rankings are. We also add new towns and categories throughout the year.
